Tony Jebara, associate professor of computer science, spoke recently about his novel research using GPS data at an event sponsored by the Engineering Annual Fund at The New York Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Ramamoorthi was cited for “investigating foundations of the visual appearance of objects and developing mathematical and computational models for recreating complex scenes for automated image understanding, and for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.”
The Columbia Computer Science students Bhargav Bhatt, Bogdan Caprita and Aaron Roth were recognized with the Computing Research Association’s Outstanding Undergraduate Award for 2005. Aaron and Bhargav received Honorable Mention awards, while Bogdan was one of only ten finalists in the United States.
Claire Lackner and Catherine Lennon were selected for Honorable Mention for the Computing Research Association’s Outstanding Undergraduate Award for 2006. Both are part of a select group of only 20 female undergraduates in the country that have been honored with the Outstanding Undergraduate Award this year.
Adam Aviv, an undergraduate student in the Department, has been selected for Honorable Mention in the Computing Research Association’s (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Award for 2007.
Sahar Hasan, a junior in the Department of Computer Science, and Ian Vo, a senior, were selected for Honorable Mention in the 2008 Outstanding Undergraduate Award competition held by the Computing Research Association (CRA), the “association of more than 200 North American academic departments of computer science, computer engineering, and related fields.”
Prof. Julia Hirschberg was named as one of the 12 initial Fellows of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA).
Prof. Hirschberg, along with Prof. Ani Nenkova at the University of Pennsylvania, have received a grant from the National Science Foundation titled “Corpus-Based Studies of Lexical, Acoustic-Prosodic, and Discourse Entrainment in Spoken Dialogue”.
In early May, scientists at Columbia University gathered in the Sherman Fairchild building on the Morningside campus to celebrate the new Pe’er/Bussemaker Lab for Systems Biology—the first of its kind at the University. Prof. Dana Pe’er holds a joint appointment in Computer Science and Biology.
Charles Shen received a Best Student Paper award at IPTComm 2008, held in Heidelberg, Germany.
Prof. Angelos Keromytis has been appointed to the scientific advisory board of CERTH (Center for Research and Technology, Hellas) by the Greek ministry of development.
Prof. Luca Carloni and Prof. Keren Bergman (Electrical Engineering) received a grant from the National Science Foundation entitled “Photonic Interconnection Networks for Chip-Multiprocessor Computing Systems”.
Prof. Henning Schulzrinne was appointed to the Internet2 Applications, Middleware & Services Advisory Council (AMSAC).
Prof. Ken Ross received the Columbia Engineering School Alumni Association (CESAA) Distinguished Faculty Teaching Awards.
Prof. Shree Nayar was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for “the development of computational cameras and physics-based models for computer vision and computer graphics.”
