Course Description

COMS6998 Mobile Health is a graduate-level seminar course that explores how mobile and wearable technologies can transform healthcare through continuous, real-world health monitoring. The course covers a broad spectrum of health domains, including physical health, cardiovascular health, sleep health, diabetes management, mental health, infant care, and maternal health.

Developing effective mobile health systems requires an interdisciplinary perspective spanning sensing hardware, data analytics, and human-centered design. Throughout the course, students will learn how existing research addresses these perspectives across various health domains. Students will also examine the unique challenges of deploying these technologies on mobile and wearable platforms, including constraints in form factor, energy consumption, computational resources, and long-term wearability.

Seminar Format

For each topic, we will study both conventional perspectives and recent advances in the research literature. Students will learn key principles in mobile health research, understand the state of the art in this research area, and gain hands-on experience conducting original research through semester-long projects. The end goal is to prepare students to produce research of publishable quality while practicing essential skills in critical paper analysis, technical writing, and oral presentation through class discussions, paper critiques, project reports, and presentations.

As a research-oriented seminar, the course is based primarily on research papers from leading conferences and journals rather than a traditional textbook. Students are expected to have a solid background in machine learning, embedded systems, mobile systems, and human-computer interaction (HCI) or UI/UX design.

Prerequisites

Because this is a high-level course, we assume that students already have a solid understanding of the basics of machine learning, embedded systems, mobile systems, and human-computer interaction (HCI) or UI/UX design. Relevant coursework and experience working on related projects can demonstrate this background. The course project is an important part of the class, and students must have strong programming skills and prior project experience.

Grading Policy

  • 70% Project
  • 20% Paper presentation
  • 10% Class discussion
