Cloud and Mobile Security Seminar -- Spring 2013 |
In this class, we will read a number of papers (see the schedule). For each paper, a student or group of students will be asked to present the paper. The presentation should present a technical overview of the paper and argue the merits and flaws of the paper. Each paper presentation should be 20-25 minutes, plus 10-15 minutes for questions and class discussion. Each presentation must include a list of questions or discussion points (at least 3-4 points) that the class can talk about after the presentation. There will be 2 paper presentations per class. All students are required to read the papers before they are presented and also to participate in the class discussions.
Presentations will be graded based on apparent understanding of the material in the paper, presentation style, insightfulness of the discussion topics raised to the class, and entertainment value. All students will be expected to make paper presentations. To avoid being assigned a paper that you do not want to present, you should volunteer early for your paper selection. If a paper has not yet been assigned student presenters and you would like to volunteer to present it, just send email to the instructor to sign up.
In creating your presentations, you are free to use any additional material beyond the content of the paper. For instance, you can reference other papers that may discuss similar work. However, the presentation should represent your own viewpoint, and you should clearly cite any other work you use for your presentations. Failure to make proper citations will adversely affect your presentation grade.
We strongly encourage you to use the presentation equipment available in the course's classroom. This link describes the facilities available. You may also use other presentation media, but you will be responsible for providing your own A/V equipment.
You will be required to submit your presentation (PDF form) to the instructor before 4:10pm on the day of your presentation. Failure to submit the presentation may result in a downgrade of your presentation.
For each paper discussed in class, you are required to submit a review for it by 12pm on the day the paper is presented. To prepare and submit your review, you will use our HotCRP service located here. HotCRP is an open-source conference management software that is used by most major conferences for paper reviewing. Instructions for how to prepare and submit your review are here. Reviews will be graded based on apparent understanding of the paper, critical view of the paper, but also the ability to appreciate the benefits of the techniques being presented. Insightfulness is of huge value here!
The students presenting a paper that day are required to look at their colleagues' reviews and can include the most interesting comments among the discussion points in their presentations. Students not presenting a paper that day should raise their own most interesting points in class and propose their discussion at the end of the presentation.
(New:) Students presenting papers do not have to review any paper on the day of their presentation.
There will be no extensions for reviews or cancelations of presentations except in documented medical cases. If you have a documented medical reason that prevents you from giving presentations in front of audiences or from discussing in class, contact the instructor before or on the third class (Feb 14, 2013). Please see our policies for details.
