COMS W4118: Operating Systems I

Dept. of Computer Science, Columbia University

Spring 2013 — Kaustubh Joshi

Grading Policy

Grades for the class will be based on the following scores. Final grades will be assigned on a curve.

If you have complaints about grading, send mail to the class staff mailing list at within 2 weeks of the grade being assigned and resolve it with one of the TAs. If the matter is still unresolved, escalate by sending me (the instructor) email directly.

Late Policy

Homeworks are due at 12:01AM of their due date, i.e., midnight the day before. All submissions will be timestamped and only the last one counts. Homeworks submitted up to a day late will be penalized 10% of the maximum possible score. Any submissions thereafter will receive zero credit. There are no exceptions except for extraordinary family or medical circumstances &mdash in which case you will need to provide a letter from one of the student deans or appropriate documentation from a doctor.

Collaboration and Academic Honesty

Read and abide by the rules on academic honesty found on the Columbia CS website.

In a nutshell, you are actively encourgaged to discuss the general concepts behind the assignments with your classmates through the discussion forum. However, plagiarism is strictly forbidden. The work you submit for written assignments must be your own and code for programming assignments must come from your group, not from other classmates or from the Internet. All your sources must be referenced. This includes identifying other students you may have discussed solutions with and places you've received coding help from.

No distinction will be made between students who cheat and those who facilitate cheating by revealing the solutions to homework problems and programming assignments. You are responsible for protecting your own work by removing read-access to anyone but yourself (for written assignments) or your group (for programming problems). If you are aware of cheating going on, you should report it to me or the TAs. Not doing so is aiding and abetting, and makes you guilty as well.

I have a strict zero tolerance policy for any infringement of the above. Perpetrators will receive a zero homework grade and a severe overall grade penalty for the first offense. Egregious cases of cheating including repeat offenses or cheating on exams will fail the class and be reported to the dean for further disciplinary action.
