Ang Cui is a former PhD Student. His current research focus is on embedded devices such as home and corporate routers and cell phones. He is the primary inventor of a novel host-based defense mechanism known as Symbiotic Embedded Machines. SEMs are designed specifically to retrofit black-box, vulnerable legacy embedded systems with sophisticated anti-exploitation mechanisms. Over the past 3 years, Ang has been actively quantifying the extent of the embedded threat in real-world environments, developing novel exploitation techniques for embedded systems such as enterprise networking equipment and developing practical defenses for embedded systems which constitutes our global communication substrate.
His current projects include: Symbiotic Embedded Machines and Vulnerable Embedded Device Scan.
Malek Ben Salem is a cyber security research scientist at Accenture Technology Labs.
She earned her PhD degree in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2011.
Her research interests lie in insider threat detection, security analytics, and distributed machine learning.
She is currently working on user behavior profiling for host-based active authentication.
Malek also holds a MSc in Computer Science from Columbia University, and a Dilp.-Ing. in
Electrical Engineering from the University of Hanover, Germany.
Yingbo Song graduated from PhD program. His research was in machine learning, network security and their intersection in intrusion detection systems. His research focus was on web-layer code-injection detection using off-host sensors, machine learning models for anomaly detection in network flows and shellcode polymorphism.
Nathaniel Boggs is a former PhD Student who joined the lab in Fall 2009.
Nathaniel is currently researching new computer security metrics and
anomaly detection systems.
Jatin Kataria Alumnus
Jatin Kataria graudated from Master program. He was working on Symbiotic Embedded Machine project. His research focus was on implementing SEM for MIPS and creating reliable large scale exploits for Cisco IOS.
Younghee Park was a post-doctoral research scientist in the Computer Science at Columbia University in New York
City. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University in December 2010. Her main research interests were around computer network and system security including malware analysis and defense, attack attribution, IP traceback, botnets, insider attacks.

Michael Costello is a Research Staff Associate focused on embedded system offensive and defensive research.
Jonathan Voris is a former postdoctoral research scientist with IDS. He is now a professor at NYIT. Jon's interests include the security and privacy of mobile and ubiquitous computing systems, usability, and defenses against insider threats. He is currently involved in the DARPA ADAMS project. Prior to his academic career, Jon worked as a Software Engineer and Network Manager for companies in the New York metropolitan area.
Sean Whalen was a postdoctoral researcher in the IDS lab at Columbia University, focusing on anomaly detection in the cloud for the MEERKATS project. He received his PhD from the University of California, Davis in the fall of 2010 and spent the following year as an I3P postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research interests include computer security, machine learning, network theory, statistical inference, complex systems, and immersive visualization.
Peter is a former Graduate Research Assistant of the IDS Lab. His main interest is in Cloud Computing and moving defense against intrusion detection.
David is a former PhD student. He investigated the effects of synchronization scheduling on multithreaded program security. His other interests include system-level security and program correctness.
