E3998: Pioneer DRM5004X CDROM Jukebox Project Outline

  1. Standalone setup and test of jukebox.

  2. Use Pioneer test tools such as 500UTIL.EXE to check out SCSI connection. See if CDROM drive can be accessed just like a regular Sun SCSI CD-ROM device or if drivers are required. If so, the CDROM loaded should look like a file system.

  3. Try out (e.g.) IXOS and SmartStorage software. Find out price, proceed to next step :-)

  4. Development of low-level function library for moving robotic loader by computer control.

  5. Determine if audio CDs can be read through the SCSI interface.

  6. Interface to RTSP server being built. If whole CD jukebox is not being mapped into a file system, enhance server to automatically select CD, buffer the desired audio/video file to local disk (since the CD runs at 4x speed). Implement caching to replace disk copies that have not been accessed recently.

  7. Write audio CD, ASF and/or QuickTime reader for RTSP server.

  8. Create an index so that if CDs are moved, the index can be updated automatically.
