The Latino Disconnect

Abstract

Prof. Negron-Muntaner will discuss her second report on Latinos in media, this time focusing on the impact and responses of Latinos to major media mergers in the last decade. The report's main goal was to better understand what she calls the "Latino disconnect": While the number of Latino media consumers, content providers, and entrepreneurs grows exponentially, the availability of diverse media, affordable broadband, and leadership positions in merged companies does not. The report also considers how Latinos have organized against media market consolidation and why these efforts have become more effective and whether streaming companies like Netflix or Hulu are more diverse than traditional companies in their original programming.
