In this talk we will discuss the emerging fields of digital humanities, computational journalism, and quantitative social science. We will consider promises, successes, and failures in this space. Students will be introduced to ongoing projects on campus and beyond.
My research happens at the intersection of people, texts, and technology. Recently, I've published articles in Computational Culture, boundary 2, and Modernism/modernity on topics that range from book piracy, to algorithmic composition, unintelligent design, and the history of data visualization.A former software engineer at Microsoft and currently a faculty associate at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard, I am working to complete my first book manuscript on Plain Text.
