Lipton, College of Computing, Georgia Tech, USA S. Rajagopalan, Applied Research, Telcordia Technologies, USA D.N. Serpanos, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Eng., Univ. of Patras, Greece Scope ---------- The dramatic technological progress in optical and electronic systems at the end of the century has enabled the development and deployment of an increasing number of sophisticated services to the business and to the home. Powerful, low-cost computing systems and advanced residential and consumer systems provide significant processing power to individual users, while high-speed links and advanced network technology (satellite communications, Internet, intranets, digital TV, etc.) enable the delivery of large volumes of data at high speed from remote servers. Despite the increasing number of network services, an impeding factor for the deployment of an even larger number of them is the concern for security of services. The lack of complete, easy to implement, end-to-end security solutions in the emerging heterogeneous environments has prohibited the development of applications which involve exchange of ``sensitive'' information, such as the eagerly expected electronic commerce, the digital distribution of copyrighted material, etc. Such services will have an even stronger social impact than the one we experience today. In this special issue of IEEE Network, we focus on Network and Service Security. We seek papers that either describe important technical issues and solutions, or provide tutorial overviews in the area. Case studies of implementations are encouraged. The topics of interest include (but are not limited to): - Network security - Internet security - Security architectures for network services - Conditional access systems - Viruses, worms and other network attacks - Denial of Service - Defense technologies (firewalls, immune systems, etc.) - Intrusion detection - Protection from multi-layer attacks - New control paradigms for automated response to massive attacks - Special security issues for very large networks - Security for IP Telephony - Encryption/decryption systems Manuscript Submission ----------------------------------- Submissions should be sent to any of the editors, either in hard copy (5 copies), or electronically in Postscript or PDF format (electronic submission is preferable). Additional information including Guidelines for Authors is available at the IEEE Network Website: http://www.comsoc.org/socstr/org/operation/techcom/ntwrk/authors.html Schedule -------------- Paper Submission Deadline: April 1, 2002 Feedback to Authors: June 30, 2002 Final Manuscripts to IEEE: September 1, 2002 Publication of Special Issue: November/December 2002 Guest Editor Contact Information ===================================== Prof. R.J.
