Gyanu Education Fund

Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues,

As some of you might remember, I ran the Philadelphia Marathon four years ago, in 2006, to raise funds for Nepali children from impoverished families in Kathmandu, Nepal. With the help of kind supporters like you, a total sum of $1,412 was collected to support the education of thirty young students living in extreme poverty. The fund lasted till May of 2008 and helped defray the educational costs including books, stationary, tuition and admission fees for the selected group of students for two years. Students receiving the scholarship were in their pre-teen and early teenage years and come from families of menial laborers in the city of Kathmandu.

There are countless number of similar children who could benefit from such scholarships to pursue at least primary education in public schools of Kathmandu. Since the benefits to the children are enormous, I am participating in the       NYC Triathlon on July 18th, 2010 to raise funds once again to continue helping these children. It is quite amazing how little it takes to change lives of these children in Kathmandu. To give you a perspective, a sum of $50-60 can support one child’s education for a year! That’s less than $5 a month! A spare change for you, one year of hope and smile for a child. If you think you can help, please read below and donate online (secure) or mail a check to me. Thank you so much for your help!

Regards,
Sameer

Samjhana Tamang Sangita Pariyar Rubin Sundas Sashi Subba

Samjhana Tamang, age 11, is an orphan. Rubin Sundas, age 9, lives with his parents who are garment factory workers. Sangita Pariyar's (age 9) father also works in a garment factory. Sashi subba's mother works as a household worker. All four children come from different backgrounds and have different stories to tell, yet they have a common bond of hope in the face of poverty. The children share hope of a good education and a dream of finishing school. The poverty of their caretakers and guardians makes it very difficult to incur the cost of their education. With a total household income of less than $75 a month, these families have very little left for themselves after paying for their children's education and their day to day basic living expenses for food, lodging and health.

If you think you can help, please donate to support a child's education. Save your Starbucks change so that a child can study for a whole year. There is zero administration cost with this fund so all that is raised will be used for the students.

About Gyanu Education Fund

Gyanu Maskey is a veteran primary school educator who has devoted over thirty years of her life to teaching children in a public school called Lok-hit Nimna Madhyamik Bidhyala in Kathmandu, Nepal. This school attracts students from impoverished families in the capital due to relatively lower educational expenses. Mrs Maskey has been sponsoring the primary education of several students in the last decade out of her pocket and from sheer generosity. Gyanu Education Fund (GEF) was established in her honor to support the education of more students from poor economic backgrounds in Kathmandu. Currently, GEF has not yet been registered as a Non-Profit Organization, but given the overwhelming support of many donors in the last fund-raiser, we are working towards establishing GEF as a formal entity.
