My trip to Paris

In September, 1999, I traveled to Paris to present a paper at the Third European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries. Of course, I used the opportunity to explore as much of the city as possible. Below are some pictures from my trip:

Above is a picture of the outside of the first McDonalds that I saw in Paris (so of course I ate there). The had a "sandwiches from around the world" thing going on, something I've never seen in the states.

Above is a picture of the Royal With Cheese that I ate there.

And here is my meal at Quick, a fast food chain I've never seen in America.

This is a picture of the Bibliotheque Nationale, a relatively new building where the conference took place.

This is a shot of the famous Eiffel Tower. Those silly French people call it La Tour Eiffel.

The Sacre Coeur is a famous church at the top of a large hill in Paris.

If you turn around at the same spot the previous picture was taken, this is what the city looks like from there!

This is a close-up of a hot dog stand nearby the Louvre. Note that Diet Coke is called Coca Cola light! And it tastes awful!

The Venus de Milo can be seen inside the Louvre. I took some pictures of the Mona Lisa also (silly French people call it La Joconde), but they didn't come out well.

The Avenue de Champs Elysees runs from the Louvre to the famours Arc de Triumphe, pictured above.

Those silly French people change the titles of American movies. For example, "Analyze This" became "Mafia Blues"!

The beautiful Seine runs through the city.

The Moulin Rouge is a famous theater with showgirls.

The Louvre is not the only museum in Paris. This is the inside of the Museum de Orsay. If you look out the glass clock from the inside, you can see the Sacre Coeur atop its hill.

Napoleon's dead body is in here. He doesn't seem so tough now, does he?

I bought this baguette at a take-out stand next to one of the subway stops. It was good! The Eiffel Tower is in the background.

The remains of many dead bodies stretch across the Catacombes under Paris. Here I am leaning back against the skeletons in this self-taken photo.
