Eventually, I hope to have an awesome web page containing critiques of every movie I've ever seen along with tools to help search for movies according to various attributes.
For now, I'll have to do with what's here.
My interest in film does go beyond watching. In April and May of 1997, I participated in an 8-week filmmaking workshop at The New York Film Academy. I highly recommend this to anyone who is considering it!
My final project for the course was a 7 minute, 16 mm, black and white film. We didn't learn synchronous sound (all sound is added afterwards), so one challenge was to develop a story without dialog. I was quite happy with the way my film turned out, and I eventually had it converted to video and then Real Video. Of course, there is a loss of quality with each conversion, and Real Video windows are small, so there is a segment of my film in which the protagonist is typing on a computer, and the text is not readable in this format. The text is really necessary for understanding the simple story, and it is the source of humor for my silly piece, but I've decided to make it available anyway. The jist of it is that a detective who has been searching for a killer, known as The Butcher, is typing into a journal about the case. The detective fears that the Butcher has fled the state, that he may need to travel far to find The Butcher, and that he may need to continue the search for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, we know that The Butcher is in the detective's department, ready to kill! Click here to see my movie!
In addition to final projects, each student makes two short silent films and one music video during the course. One of my crew members, Satoko Ichimura (Ichi) set her music video to Ben Folds Five's "Song for the Dumped". I did the camera work (completely at her direction) except for one scene in which I cameo. Click here to see her music video!
I've written two full length screen-plays in my spare time, and I hope to someday direct a full-length independent film out of one of them or a script I will write in the future.
