Title: Learning Toward Domain Specific Knowledge Acquisition

Time: Thursday April 3, 12noon - 1pm

Place: CS Conference Room in MUDD

Abstract:

This talk will present an inductive relational learning framework for knowledge acquisition from text, focusing on terminological knowledge in medical domain. I will present a two step approach: 1) extraction of definitions of medical terms from on-line literature, and 2) semantic analysis of definitions for building the terminological knowledge base. The semantic analysis involves learning using a domain ontology as background knowledge.

Then i will briefly discuss how this framework can be used to extract factual knowledge from text. I will define what i mean by factual knowledge and how terminological and factual knowledge are used in the context of text data mining, which will be part of my thesis proposal.
