The HLT/NAACL 2004 Committee invites proposals for workshops in HLT/NAACL 2004, to be held in The Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, May 2-7, 2004.

Workshops will be held on May 6-7.

CONFERENCE BACKGROUND

HLT/NAACL 2004 is the second conference in the HLT/NAACL series, the first having been held in May 2003, in Edmonton, Alberta. HLT/NAACL combines the HLT and NAACL (North American Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics) conference series. For details please see http://www.hlt-naacl04.org. A major goal of HLT/NAACL 2004 is to bring together researchers from the NLP, Speech and IR communities, to identify to identify and attempt to develop solutions to problems of common interest to the three fields.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

Given the stated goal of HLT/NAACL 2004, preference will be given to workshops that are likely to be of interest to at least two out of the three of the NLP, Speech and IR communities. We therefore encourage workshop proposers to include in their proposals a description of how their workshop will appeal to more than one community.

Proposals for workshops should contain:

• A title and brief (2-page max) description of the workshop topic and content. If the workshop is part of a series, please list previous workshops.
• The desired workshop length (one or two days), and an estimate of the audience size.
• The names, postal addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of the organizers, with one-paragraph statements of their research interests and areas of expertise.
• A description of special requirements for technical needs (computer infrastructure, etc.)

Proposals should be submitted by electronic mail, as soon as possible, but no later than November 1, 2003. Either plain (ASCII) text or PDF is acceptable, but unless special formatting is particularly needed, we would encourage you to use plain text since there is generally no problem with portability of plain text. The subject line should be: "HLT/NAACL 2004 WORKSHOP PROPOSAL". PLEASE NOTE: PROPOSALS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY REGULAR MAIL OR FAX. Submissions should be mailed to: hlt-naacl04-workshops@cs.columbia.edu.

PRACTICAL ARRANGEMENTS

Accepted workshop organizers must provide descriptions of their workshops for inclusion in the conference registration material by Feb 1, 2004. The description must be provided in two formats: an ASCII version that can be included with the email announcement, and an HTML version that can be included on the conference home page. These descriptions should be mailed to: hlt-naacl04-workshops@cs.columbia.edu.

Organizers must provide full workshop materials to the Proceedings Chair by March 1, 2004.

Also please note two other important dates. In order to make sure that workshops, once accepted, proceed in a timely manner, we require that the workshop Call for Papers be distributed no later than November 21, 2003. If the workshop organizers wish, they may vet their CFP's with the workshop chairs, but in any case the final version must be submitted for publication to Priscilla Rasmussen no later than November 21.

We also strongly suggest that the submission deadline for papers be set no later than January 21, 2004, in order to allow enough time for reviews and the submission of revised versions of the accepted papers. Note that the final workshop materials must be received by the Publications Chair by March 1, 2004.

FINANCES

Workshops must be financially self-supporting. The conference organizers will establish workshop registration rates so as to provide the room, audio-visual equipment, internet access, snacks for breaks, and the workshop proceedings.
