Anyone,
What is the difference between the system call gettimeofday() and the function sys_gettimeofday(). The Linux kernel book (p154) states "The gettimeofday() system call is imlemented by the sys_gettimeofday() function."
I thought a system call was the 'lowest' you could go without hardware interaction. So, exactly what is sys_gettimeofday()? Function or system call or (if there's such a thing) hardware call?
Novice OS person here, so please explain; do not add to my confusion with acronyms, abbreviations and the sort.

Thanks!

Please take a look at Chapter 8: System Calls of the O'Reilly Linux Kernel book. Figure 8-1 on page 235 does a pretty good job of answering your question.

Hope this helps.
