Earth Institute Digital Library - Requirements
1. Assess information resources
- What are the important resources owned by Columbia?
- What are the most promising resources reflecting Columbia's expertise?
- What are relevant outside resources?
2. User and Customer Needs
- What are the key user communities within EI and what are their needs?
- Which are the key related communities outside EI?
- What are the needs of onging and potential partners?
3. Identify needed tools and technology
- Which implemented tools should be considered?
- What is the most flexible and effective operational technology?
- Which close-to-operational (experimental, useful within about a one-year
time frame) systems should be considered?
4. Assess needs for cataloguing, access, and preservation
- What kind of cataloguing and data bases are needed?
- What additional access mechanisms should be considered?
- What are the EI needs for preservation of data, both in terms
of archiving and format changes?
5. Identify Research projects
- Which research projects within Columbia from both the technology and library communities are relevant to the EI Digital Library?
- What mechanisms for interaction and collaboration should be established?
- What projects should be reviewed outside Columbia e.g. industry,
universities, government?
