What distinguishes a Digital Library from a Data Center?

=> The Digital Library consists of more than content, whereas a data center emphasizes content.

=> A Digital Library is not valued by the size of its internal holdings (analogous to number of volumes in a traditional library) or by the amount of data in its repository.

=> The Earth Institute Digital Library will contain content in particular domains which reflects the interests and expertise of its community.

=> The Digital Library offers tools to structure, search, access, and display multiple heterogeneous data sets using information technology.

=> The Digital Library is valued by its ability to second guess its constituent communities on their needs and demands, such that its content is continually reshaped.

=> An efffective Digital Library monitors use and users to determine where they go and for what purpose in order to prioritize investments in content and value-adding activities.
