While sentence extraction as an approach to summarization has been shown
to work in documents of certain genres, because of the conversational
nature of email communication, sentence extraction may not result in a
coherent summary. For example, an extractive summary of an email thread
may include a question asked in the thread, but may not include the
answer offered. In this talk, I present our approach for extractive
summarization of email conversations, automatic detection of question
answer pairs and their integration with the extractive summaries. Then I
will compare various approaches to the integration, and show that their
use improves the quality of email summaries. I will also describe the
email summarization interface we have developed that allows users to
summarize email conversations from email clients such as Microsoft
Outlook.
