ABSTRACT="This paper discusses two different methods of digital speech
interpolation (DSI). One uses a digitized version of time-assigned
speech interpolation (TASI) and the other a technique known as SPEC
(speech predictive encoded communications). The digitized TASI system
employs the low speech activity on incoming telephone channels to
interpolate speech spurts onto a smaller number of transmission
channels. A technique known as bit reduction makes it possible to
generate additional channels for TASI transmission during overload
conditions so that the probability of disruptive speech clips can be
significantly reduced. The SPEC method incorporates PCM sample
prediction to achieve a substantial reduction in the number of samples
needed for transmission and inherently avoids the initial clips of
speech spurts which are encountered in TASI. The operation of each
method is analyzed to evaluate its performance as a function of the
number of channels processed. TASI is considered in terms of degradation
due to initial clips of speech spurts whose duration is sufficient to
damage the intelligibility of initial consonants, while SPEC is
evaluated in terms of degradation due to added prediction distortion. In
each case the ratio of the number of incoming channels to the number of
transmission channels (the interpolation advantage) as a function of the
total number of transmission channels is calculated for amounts of
degradation that are considered subjectively insignificant. Both methods
are competitive in terms of interpolation advantage, although SPEC
achieves slightly better performance, especially when the number of
channels is small.",

ABSTRACT="A digital voice-activated switch using real-time computer
simulations has been developed for applications in the speech predictive
encoding communications (SPEC) system. This switch can also be applied
to other voice-activated systems such as SPADE and SCPC. It employs a
level-detection technique with adaptive thresholds to detect speech in
the presence of noise on telephone circuits. This paper discusses the
design criteria and objective tests involved in determining the
operating characteristics of the voice detector. The objective testing
confirms the advantages of the new design: rapid fine grain threshold
adjustment to varying noise, improved noise immunity at all noise
levels, and enhanced switching characteristics on speech bursts. A
limited critical-listener subjective evaluation has yielded excellent
results.",

ABSTRACT="This paper develops aspects of a model of texture. The notion
of a primitive is defined, from which unobservable, highly regular ideal
textures are generated. By examining this construction process, various
consequences of adopting a local approach to texture are realised.
Transformations are defined from the graph representation of ideal
textures onto the representation of observable textures. Through this
transformational stage, the statistical approach to texture is shown to
be a generalisation of the structural approach in the same way that
random variables are a generalisation of deterministic variables.",

ANNOTE="A method is presented for numerical inverting a Laplace
transform that requires, only sine, cosine and exponential functions.
The method is conceptually much like the method of Dubner and Abate
(Dubner, H.; Abate, J.), which approximates the inverse function by
means of a Fourier cosine series. The method presented here, however,
differs from theirs in two important respects. First of all, the Fourier
series contains additional terms involving the sine function selected
such that the error in the approximation is less than that of Dubner and
Abate and such that the Fourier series approximates the inverse function
on an interval of twice the length of the corresponding interval in
Dubner and Abate's method. Second, there is incorporated into the method
in this paper a transformation of the approximating series into one that
converges very rapidly. In test problems using the method it has
routinely been possible to evaluate inverse transforms with considerable
accuracy over a wide range of values of the independent variable using a
relatively few determinations of the Laplace transform itself.",

average packet time-delay formulas in a packet-switching
store-and-forward network. The approximation technique appropriately
incorporates arrival and departure packet interferences with the recent
queueing results in a noninterfered communication path. Simulation
results, for basic flow configurations, show the approximate time-delay
function to constitute a very close lower bound over a wide range of
traffic intensities. The resulting average time-delay approximation when
a Poisson assumption is made, is shown to constitute an upper bound. A
procedure for approximate network time-delay analysis is then
presented.",

is studied. The input process to the first buffer consists of individual
arrivals characterized by a geometric distribution of the time between
arrivals; and the probability that the output channel of each buffer,
except the last, is transmitting at any epoch depends only on the number
of digits in the buffer at that epoch. The transmitting state of the
last buffer may depend more generally on the history of that buffer. The
analysis shows that in equilibrium, the input processes to the
subsequent buffers in the system are geometric with the same parameter
as the input process to the first buffer. Therefore, each buffer in the
system can be analyzed separately. Furthermore, the equilibrium state
probabilities for a given buffer at a given epoch are independent of
those for any other buffer in the system at the same epoch.",

always assumed infinite storage capacity in store-and-forward (S/F)
nodes. In this paper, this assumption is relaxed and a model for a
packet switching network in which each node has a finite pool of S/F
buffers is presented. A packet arriving at a node in which all S/F
buffers are temporarily filled, is discarded. The channel transmission
control mechanisms of positive acknowledgement [ACK] and time-out of
packets are included in this model. Invidual S/F nodes are analyzed
separately as queueing networks with different classes of packets. The
single node results are interfaced by imposing a continuity of flow
constraint. A heuristic algorithm for determining a balanced assignment
of nodal S/F buffer capacities is proposed. Numerical results for the
performance of a 19 node network are presented.",

ABSTRACT="In speech analysis, the voiced-unvoiced decision is usually
performed in conjunction with pitch analysis. The linking of
voiced-unvoiced (U-UV) decision to pitch analysis not only results in
unnecessary complexity, but makes it difficult to classify short speech
segments which are less than a few pitch periods in duration. In this
paper, we describe a pattern recognition approach for deciding whether a
given segment of a speech signal should be classified as voiced speech,
unvoiced speech, or silence, based on measurements made on the signal.
In this method, five different measurements are made on the speech
segment to be classified. The measured parameters are the zero crossing
rate, the speech energy, the correlation between adjacent speech
samples, the first predictor coefficient from a 12-pole linear
predictive coding (LPC) analysis, and the energy in the prediction
error. The speech segment is assigned to a particular class based on a
minimum-distance rule obtained under the assumption that the measured
parameters are distributed according to the multidimensional Gaussian
probability density function. The means and covariances for the Gaussian
distribution are determined from manually classified speech data
included in a training set. The method has been found to provide
reliable classification with speech segments as short as 10 ms and has
been used for both speech-analysis and recognition applications. A
simple nonlinear smoothing algorithm is described to provide a smooth
3-level contour of an utterance for use in speech recognition
applications. Quantitative results and several examples illustrating the
performance of the method are included in the paper.",

reduces the possibility of errors and inconsistencies, minimizes the
programming needed, and improves the documentation and
understandability, we believe that this methodology will facilitate the
installation or modification of complex trunk protocols and other
communication protocols.",

ABSTRACT="Ethernet is a branching broadcast communication system for
carrying digital data packets among locally distributed computing
stations. The packet transport mechanism provided by Ethernet has been
used to build systems which can be viewed as either local computer
networks or loosely coupled multiprocessors. An Ethernet's shared
communication facility, its Ether, is a passive broadcast medium with no
central control. Coordination of access to the Ether for packet
broadcasts is distributed among the contending transmitting stations
using controlled statistical arbitration. Switching of packets to their
destinations on the Ether is distributed among the receiving stations
using packet address recognition. Design principles and implementation
are described, based on experience with an operating Ethernet of 100
nodes along a kilometer of coaxial cable. A model for estimating
performance under heavy loads and a packet protocol for error controlled
communication are included for completeness.",

transmission delay, and error-recovery mechanism on the efficiency of
the communication channel in computer-computer communications. The
system investigated are full-duplex communications with unlimited and
limited buffering, and half-duplex communications. Both random and burst
errors are considered. For all cases, over a significant range of
parameters, closed-form expressions for the optimum block length, and
the corresponding efficiency are obtained. For random errors the optimum
data-block length is found to be proportional to $\sqrt{a/k}$, and the
maximum efficiency a function of $k a$, where $a$ is the message
overhead and $k$ is the error rate. The burst error results are
similar.",

ABSTRACT="A study is presented which permits the formal analysis and
synthesis of recoverable computer communication protocols. This study is
based on a formal representation of processes by a model of computation,
the Petri nets (PN's). The PN model is generalized to include a
representation of the possible failures, and then, the concept of
``recoverability'' is formally defined. A set of necessary and
sufficient conditions which a process must satisfy in order to be
recoverable is derived. In the PN model, the processes that satisfy
these conditions are shown to have some practical limitations. A new
model, the time-Petri net (TPN), is introduced to remove these
limitations. This new model allows the introduction of constraints in
the execution times of its part. As shown in this paper, the TPN appears
to be a suitable model for the study of practical recoverable processes.
Several practical communication protocols are formally designed and
analyzed using this new model, and some interesting properties of these
protocols are formally derived.",

ABSTRACT="Test have been conducted at Bell Laboratories within the last
10 years to obtain subjective evaluations of the effects of loss, noise
and talker echo on telephone transmission quality. We use these
subjective test results to formulate graphical and analytical models of
subjective opinion that can be used in network planning studies to
evaluate transmission performance of the network and to study the
effects of network changes on performance. These models are based on the
concept of a generalized transmission rating scale. Separate opinion
curves for each test take into account differences caused by factors
such as subject group, type of test, and range of conditions. We also
describe the methods of data analysis used in the formulation of the
transmission-rating scale and opinion models, provide a comparison of
the test results with the models, and discuss the models in sufficient
detail to permit their application in transmission planning studies.",
