ABSTRACT={The paper initially discusses some of the differences between
conventional computer learning algs and digital learning nets.
Particular attention is given to the division of all sensory information
into pattern information and identity information and the relationships
of these quantities during a learning operation. Generalisation in
learning nets is discussed where digital nets are compared with
threshold elements. The enhancement of the nets behaviour by means of
feedback is the saliant topic in the second half of the paper. A new
definition of {"}recognition{"} is discussed: this is based om the
generation of a stable oscillation in the feedback network. Experiments
on small learning nets are described to illustrate that nets with
feedback can recognise and recall sequences. The final section of the
paper draws some tentative comparisons between digital learning nets and
the human brain.},

ABSTRACT="Future users of large data banks must be protected from having
to know how the data is organized in the machine (the internal
representation). A prompting service which supplies such information is
not a satisfactory solution. Activities of users at terminals and most
application programs should remain unaffected when the internal
representation of data is changed and even when some aspects of the
external representation are changed. Changes in data representation will
often be needed as a result of changes in query, update and report
traffic and natural growth in the types of stored information. Existing
noninferential, formatted data systems provide users with tree
structured files or slightly more general network models of the data. In
section 1, inadequancies of these models are discussed. A model based on
n-ary relations, a normal form for data base relations, and the concept
of a universal data sublanguage are introduced. In section 2, certain
operations on relations (other than logical inteference) are discussed
and applied to the problems of redundancy and consistency in the user's
model.",

functions are derived; expressions are obtained in the case of a three

that the dam ever dries up before overflow is derived and it is shown
that the ratio of these probabilities is independent of the size of the

ABSTRACT="A queueing model with limited waiting room (buffer), batch
(burst) Poisson arrivals, and a synchronous server (transmission
channel) with constant service time (constant transmission rate) is
studied. Using average burst length and traffic intensity as parameters,
the relationships among buffer size, overflow probabilities, and an
approximation to the expected queueing delay of each burst due to
buffering are obtained. These relationships are represented in graphs
which provided a guide to the buffer design problem. A simple example is
given which applies these results to the design of a buffer system in a
time-sharing computer system. Although the problem arose in studies of
design of statistical multiplexers, the queueing model developed is
quite general and may be useful for other industrial applications.",
