ABSTRACT="This article describes tests made to select design parameters
for the speech detectors in the TASI system. Results of subjective tests
carried out to determine maximum permissible loading of TASI circuits
during busy hours are also described. Finally, conclusions drawn from
observations on a working TASI system are given. These observations
indicate that TASI is a more satisfactory method of increasing
transatlantic cable capacity than alternate methods, such as the use of
2-kc channel banks. A 40 dBm0 sensitivity was chosen across a 500 to
3000 Hz band, with an operate time of 5 ms and a deferred hangover time
of between 25 and 240 ms. Full hangover time is reached for talkspurts
above about 60 ms. For 240 ms hangover, the activity factor was
determined to be 39\% and the average talkspurt 1.1 s. For 125 ms
hangover, activity decreased to 38 \% and the average talkspurt
decreased to 0.6 s.",
