"Quality of Service over IP Networks"
The following is the bibliography for my
Candidacy Exam. The testers were Professors Yemini,
Schulzrinne and Dr. Florissi. The date of
the exam was Wednesday, 12/08/99, 11am-12:30pm, 620 CEPSR. I passed!
My slides for the presentation are located here.
Some advice to anyone taking the exam:
- Present the topic and not the set of papers you read. Don't let the paper list limit you in anyway.
- Know what companies are currently selling, buying and using.
- Anticipate the questions that will be asked:
- During your presentation expect specific questions related to each slide you present, ie.
"How does this compare to X".
- After the presentation expect abstract questions, such as "what if...", "How would you
do X, given Y and Z", "How would you extend the technique you just presented...", etc.
- If your presentation is more high level, expect more questions on the details. If your
talk covers a lot of details, expect questions at a higher level. Whatever you don't
cover they will ask you questions on inorder to fill in the holes.
- The goal of the presentation is to prove that you know the material, not to teach the material. Remind
yourself this is an exam, not a class lecture.
- Be honest and opinionated during your talk - tell them why you like or don't like a certain approach.
- Practice giving the talk to humans, not just infront of the mirror.
- The hardest part for me was to keep focused when I was asked a question (I tend to panic!). Thinking
out loud when trying to answer a question is sometimes a good thing - once they see that you are
in the ballpark, they will tend to ask you questions to guide you towards the right answer. Ask
for clarification on the question - they tend to give you more hints that way.
- Don't expect to be able to answer every question. They may push to find your limits or boundaries.
Browse over the comprehesive exam questions. Expect that a professor will ask you questions related
to his expertise.
- Expect a question or two thrown in for completeness, such as "What about security? Cost? Migration?".
Things that may be "fringe" to your main topic.
- Consider your reputation with the faculty, the confidence they have in your abilities. This is your
chance to build/improve/solidify that.
- Expect to pass, but if the faculty isn't impressed they will let you know - also known as "being force
fed a big piece of humble pie" or "getting ripped a new one".
