How to install printer on a self-maintained Ubuntu machine

printhost.cs.columbia.edu is the internet print server that allows printing to the cs public printers. The print server is configured to accomodate PCs (such as laptops) that are not pre-configured by CRF. For security reasons, you can only print from the cs network and the Columbia wireless network.

  1. Open the Printer configuration window (Go to System->Administration->Printing).
  2. Click Goto Server.
  3. The Connect to CUPS server will appear. Type localhost in the box labeled CUPS server.
Type your username in the box labeled User name.

    Click Connect.

  4. Click New printer. The New Printer will appear. Under Select Connection, select Internet Printing Protocol. Type printhost.cs.columbia.edu in the box labeled Host. Click Find Queue.

The IPP Browser will appear. Select your printer name and click Ok.

  5. For Ubuntu Jaunty/Karmic, Find Queue button is not available. If you don't know the name of the printer, click here. Type the name of the printer in the box labeled Queue after /printers/ (e.g. /printers/copyrm). Click Forward

  6. Select an appropriate driver for your printer (We will use HP LJ4250 as an example).

Select HP and click Forward. Select LaserJet 4250 from the Model and the recommended driver. Click Forward.

  7. Select DUPLEX.Click Forward.

  8. Fill in the name, description, and location of the printer. Click Apply.

Note: You can use a nickname for the Printer Name. The name will be used for your printer selection icon.

  9. Click on the name of the new printer and print a test page.
