About Bert
Bert is a Ph. D. student at Columbia University working towards his degree in Computer Science. He was born the summer of 1982 in Ithaca, NY. Shortly after, his family moved to the Boston area and he then spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Wellesley, MA. He spent his undergraduate years in Waltham, MA earning a BS and a BA in Computer Science and Philosophy, respectively, at Brandeis University. He then moved to New York City to study at Columbia, where he earned a MS degree in February 2006.

Misc.
spouterprod.c. A useful mex utility to compute sparse outer products in matlab, taking advantage in computation time and memory usage when you are interested in computing something like mask.*(U*V'), where mask is a sparse binary matrix.
Hobbies
When he has free time, Bert tries his best to be a musician. In early his high school years, he arranged a number of electronic pieces. Later, in high school and college, he explored combining his electronic songs with real voice and instrument recordings (here is a small subset).
Bert recently earned a red belt studying with the Columbia University Tae Kwon Do Club.
