Counting SIGGRAPH Papers, 2005-2010
Out of curiosity, I decided to write some quick code to parse Ke-Sen Huang’s annual list of SIGGRAPH papers to see how many came from each institution. I considered only papers from 2005-2010, since 2011’s list is still going up, and 2004 and earlier are not readily available. I also didn’t include SIGGRAPH Asia papers.
The basic process was that for each paper, I gave one “point” for each institution that contributed to the paper, so if 10 authors from Universitat Imaginarium published one paper, UI gets only 1 point. If an author has multiple affiliations, both affiliations get a point.
Disclaimer #1: The code was thrown together pretty quickly, so there’s no guarantee that some papers/institutions weren’t missed by a glitch in the code. There’s just too many for me to verify by hand that no errors were made. However, after running the code, I went through the output by hand and tried to amalgamate as many duplicates / misspellings / translations / synonyms as possible. Nevertheless, errors likely remain. For example, the various INRIA location and team names complicated matters a lot, so I have almost certainly failed to merge them appropriately. On the other hand, ETH Zurich won the prize for largest number of unique names, but I think I got them all.
Disclaimer #2: I don’t necessarily think counting SIGGRAPH papers is the best way to gage the quality of an institution or its research.
Disclaimer #3: Ke-Sen’s lists from 2008 and later include TOG papers, in various different formats, so I didn’t attempt to distinguish. This is probably reasonable, as it’s reflective of the trend in the community towards making SIGGRAPH and TOG papers comparable.
