# Henryk Wozniakowski

### Professor of Computer Science, Columbia University

Professor of Applied Mathematics, University of Warsaw

Henryk Wozniakowski earned his MS, PhD and Habilitation degrees from the University of Warsaw in 1969, 1972 and 1976. He is a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in mathematics by the University of Jena, Germany, in 2008. From 1969 he works at the University of Warsaw, from 1988 as Professor and from 2012 as Professor Emeritus. From 1984 he is Professor of Computer Science, Columbia University. He got many prizes including the Mazur Award in 1988, the special Information-based Complexity Award in 2002, the Humboldt Prize in 2006-2007, and the Orlicz Medal in 2006. He has also hold many visiting positions, in particular, at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and at the University of Jena, Germany. Dr. Wozniakowski's main research area has been information-based complexity which deals with computational complexity of continuous problems for which available information is partial, priced and noisy. He is the coauthor of the research monograph “Information-based Complexity” written with J. F. Traub and G. W. Wasilkowski, published in 1988. This book has established the field of information-based complexity. For the last 20 years he has been studied complexity of multivariate continuous problems. The main research topic is to verify tractability of such problems, that is, when the computational complexity of a multivariate problem is not exponential in the number of variables and in the reciprocal of the error threshold. He is the coauthor of the three volume research monograph “Tractability of Multivariate Problems” written with Erich Novak summarizing the current state of the art of this active field. His other research interests include computational mathematics, numerical analysis, and quantum computation. He has written over 180 research papers, 7 books and edited 3 books. He has given about 200 talks in 26 countries. He is a senior editor of the Journal of Complexity which is the major journal publishing papers on information-based complexity. He also serves on a number of other editorial boards.

Henryk Wozniakowski is married to Grazyna Wozniakowska. They have one son Artur who is married to Agnieszka, and they have two sons Filip and Mateusz.
