Mount Homedir Securely

You must be on the CS Network or on CS VPN.

To mount your CRF home directory from a Windows or Linux workstation (that is not CRF maintained), please follow these steps. (This will only work from within the CS network.)

Linux

  1. Do you have a WIN-CS account?
If not, get a WIN-CS account.  Most faculty, PhD, and academic staff should already have an account.  If you don’t have a WIN-CS account, please contact CRF to get a WIN-CS account.
  2. As root from your Linux workstation, you can mount your CRF home directory using  mount –t smbfs:
  3. For faculty, the command would be something like:
mount –t smbfs –o username=WIN-CS\\bob //pearl.cs.columbia.edu/bob /mnt

For academic staff, research, and guest users, type:

mount –t smbfs –o username=WIN-CS\\jane //pearl.cs.columbia.edu/jane /mnt

For students and visitors, type:

mount –t smbfs –o username=WIN-CS\\joe //pearl.cs.columbia.edu/joe /mnt

Windows

If your Windows XP workstation is part of the WIN-CS domain, your Z: drive should already have your home directory mounted, and you can continue using the Z: drive to access the files in your home directory.

To determine if your Windows XP machine is part of the WIN-CS domain:

    1. Click on “Start”
    2. Right-Click on “My Computer”
    3. Click on “Properties” (The “System Properties” window should appear)
    4. Click on “Computer Name” tab
    5. If you see: “Domain win.cs.columbia.edu”, then the PC is part of the win-cs domain

If your computer is not part of the WIN-CS domain, then follow these steps to mount your home directory securely.

  1. Do you have a WIN-CS account?
Get a WIN-CS account.  Most faculty, PhD, and academic staff should already have an account.  If you can’t mount your home directory, please contact CRF to get a WIN-CS account.
