What is discipline?

To be disciplined is to do what you must do when you must do it, even if you are not so inclined.

 

Why is discipline important?

Disciplined behavior is important because sometimes failure to do what must be done could lead to harm for other people.

 

What is respect?

Respect is treating others properly.

 

Why is respect important?

If you treat people improperly, people will treat you improperly.

Without respect you would be criticized a lot and people wouldn’t think you are a good person.

 

What is obedience?

Obedience is following the instructions of people who know better than you do.

 

Why is obedience important?

Being obedient allows you to learn from others.

 

What is fortitude?

Fortitude is another word for being fearless, brave, and determined.

 

Why is fortitude important?

Without fortitude you could not protect anyone.  You must be brave to defend yourself and others.

 

How has the study of Tae Kwon Do helped you develop the virtue of discipline?

Tae Kwon Do requires discipline in many ways.  One way is to perform drills even when you’re tired.  Another is to spar against a superior opponent.  Another is to repeat forms until you can do them perfectly.

 

How has the study of Tae Kwon Do helped you develop the virtue of respect?

Tae Kwon Do requires treating others with respect.  Examples are bowing to instructors and opponents.  Another example is treating my belt with pride and bowing before entering and leaving the mat.

 

How has the study of Tae Kwon Do helped you develop the virtue of obedience?

I have watched and learned from higher belts.

 

How has the study of Tae Kwon Do helped you develop the virtue of fortitude?

I am more confident.  I am stronger and more experienced.

 

What does the Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do mean to you?

An achievement and an advancement, as well as a responsibility.

 

What is your goal after you achieve your first degree black belt?

I will try to earn a second degree black belt.  I will help instruct lower belts.
